In two unprecedented votes at the UN, the United States has openly aligned itself with Russia and its friends, exposing the gaping fracture that now separates it from Europe.
Mission accomplished for Emmanuel Macron in Washington . The first of the European leaders, he was welcomed Monday at the White House with all the respect granted to allies, authorized to cautiously express his point of view while avoiding the humiliation of a public disavowal. Thus, the political display plays in his favor: here is a president who counts on the international scene, whose opinion is sought, if not necessarily followed. For Emmanuel Macron, if weakened on the domestic level, it is already a lot.
On the substantive issues, for Ukraine and for European security, it is a completely different matter. Like an enigmatic sphinx, Donald Trump let his French host speak without ever confirming the commitments that the latter pretended to have obtained. A cordial dialogue of the deaf, from which only our voluntarist president can conclude that it has changed the American's line in the slightest.
